Bacterial vaginosis, as is well known, is one of the most common infections of the female reproductive system. This infection is caused by the imbalance in the vagina causing the bacteria to grow in it. The vagina is protected by a delicate pH balance. That is to say, there is an optimum acidity that the vagina has to maintain in order to protect the reproductive system from harmful bacteria. Actually, there are good bacteria in the vagina, but once the pH imbalance occurs, the bad bacteria also begin to grow.
The most common symptoms of this disease are discharge, unpleasant odor and bacterial-vaginal itching. However, for milder infections, the symptoms may not appear. Bacterial vaginosis can affect any woman and this infection is not transmitted sexually. However, if a woman has this condition, the chances that she will acquire sexually transmitted diseases increases. This is because the vagina is no longer protected.
Treatment of this infection will not only relieve the woman from discharge, unpleasant odor and itchy bacterial vaginosis, but will also ensure that the bacteria will not affect her uterus. Untreated BV can cause bacteria to reach the cervix and uterus and cause complications during pregnancy.
Treatment can be acquired by visiting a gynecolgist and asking for his advice. Usually, an antibiotic medication is prescribed to patients and can be in the form of creams or can be taken orally. Some also treat bacterial vaginosis using live yogurt or lactobacillus acidophilus but the efficacy is still to be demonstrated by medical research.
