Dr. Michael Ward is a researcher in the intramural research program of the National Institute of Arthritis and Musculoskeletal and Skin Diseases. He presented a review of the biomarkers used or under evaluation to diagnose lupus and control the activity of the disease during the Ninth International Lupus Congress in Vancouver, British Columbia.
The Lupus Foundation of America has advocated expanding federal funding and has also supported research studies through its National Research Program to validate lupus biomarkers. Validated biomarkers are essential to have the necessary tools to improve the diagnosis and treatment of lupus, develop screening tests for the disease and accelerate the development and approval of new, safe and more tolerable therapies for lupus.
