Something that intrigued me when I was researching on gout was why there were even proteins that reabsorbed uric acid from the urine when all it does is cause hyperuricemia. Surprisingly, everyone has a low level of uric acid in the blood, which indicates that uric acid can be important for life, possibly as a natural antioxidant. However, too much causes gout.
