What is the leading cause of death in patients with rheumatoid arthritis … next
Cardiovascular disease remains the leading cause of mortality among patients with RA
In Healio, the results of a recently published study identified cardiovascular disease as the leading cause of death among patients with rheumatoid arthritis in São Paulo, Brazil, and highlighted infectious diseases as an emerging cause of death associated with rheumatoid arthritis.
Pinheiro and his colleagues reported these findings in the Journal of Rheumatology … they studied 3,629,559 death certificates issued in São Paulo issued between 1996 and 2010 and identified 3,955 that listed deaths related to rheumatoid arthritis (RA). Of these, 1,095 certificates listed RA as the underlying cause of death and 2,860 certificates listed the condition as the cause of non-underlying death.
Death occurred after 50 years in 90% of patients with RA. Seventeen patients were under 20 years of age at the time of death, and four patients had RA as the underlying cause of death. The mean age of death was 67.1 years for patients with RA as the underlying cause and 67.9 years for patients with deaths in whom RA was not an underlying cause.
Comment: it's not surprise. Patients with Ra should be monitored closely.
